Luggage & Packing

Travel Gear

Packing light for your trip is essential for a smooth and enjoyable travel experience. Carrying only the essentials in thoughtfully chosen luggage allows travellers to move more freely, reduces stress, and makes navigating busy urban environments and public transportation much easier.

Here are some key points to consider:

  • Small personal bag: Keeps valuables, documents, and quick-access items close by, providing security and convenience.

  • Backpack: Offers quick access to necessities during day trips or other outings.

  • Small suitcase: Holds essential items without adding bulk, making it easier to manage.

  • Packing cubes: Organize clothing and accessories efficiently, allowing for easy retrieval without unpacking everything.

On your trip you’ll meet two kinds of travellers:
those who pack light and those who wish they had.

Small Suitcase

We travel with a compact carry-on roller bag that meets our preferred airline’s size restrictions, accompanied by a backpack as our personal item. This light packing strategy allows us to move comfortably on planes and trains, as well as when navigating uneven street/sidewalk surfaces. Using large suitcases can make getting on/off trains and planes very stressful.

Suitcase Criteria:

  • Carry-on size: Always double-check specific airline sizing guidelines.

  • Durable design: Two-wheeled roller with recessed wheels provides better stability and durability across a range of surfaces.

  • Lightweight suitcase: A lighter bag allows for easier handling. If the suitcase becomes too heavy, plan to shift some weight into your personal item for balance.

Backpack

Airlines generally allow a backpack in addition to your carry on bag. This item is intended to be stowed under the seat in front of you. Check your airline for up to date specifications.

Versatile, light and practical – High Coast Totepack is an example of a backpack that is useful for everyday life and travelling. You can carry it over your shoulder, in your hand, or on your back. The main compartment has a computer pocket with a padded base and a small zippered pocket. The entire bag can be folded into its front pocket when not in use. Although the outer fabric is waterproof, the zippers and seams are not, so the bag can handle rain and splashes but is not fully waterproof.

Personal Small Bag

In addition to a carry-on suitcase and backpack, airlines generally permit a small personal item, which is handy for securing your important items (e.g., wallet, passport).

Fall Raven’s High Coast Pocket is an example of a well-designed personal bag. The main compartment is large enough for a smart phone and passport. An inner mesh pocket and an outside zippered pocket make it easy to keep your gear organised. Several attachment points and adjustable straps make for personalized usage: over the shoulder, on your chest or on a belt.

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are handy for efficient travel. These lightweight, zippered compartments organize clothes and accessories, making items easy to find and reducing wrinkles. They optimize luggage space, simplify packing and unpacking, and help separate clean from dirty clothes.
