Accommodations

Your Home Away From Home

Longer-term travel accommodations have become increasingly popular as more travellers seek comfortable, home-like environments during extended stays. A few options are Airbnb, VRBO and home exchanges, each offering unique benefits for extended visits.

Airbnb, VRBO and home exchanges cater to travellers who prioritize comfort, convenience, and authenticity during extended stays, offering practical solutions compared to conventional hotel lodging. The choice between these options depends on individual preferences around cost, interaction with hosts, and desired lifestyle during the trip.

Airbnb & VRBO

Airbnb & VRBO provide a wide range of lodging, from private rooms to entire homes, suitable for stays lasting weeks or months. Many listings offer discounted rates for long-term stays, typically 28 days or more. These accommodations often come fully furnished and equipped with kitchens, laundry facilities, and Wi-Fi, enabling guests to live more independently than in traditional hotels.

The flexibility of location and property type allows travellers to find places tailored to their lifestyle preferences and budget. Additionally, Airbnb hosts sometimes provide local tips and personalised recommendations, which can enrich the extended stay experience.

Home Exchanges

Home exchanges involve swapping houses with another traveller for a set period, often ranging from one week to several months. This arrangement is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in local culture while maintaining the comforts of a fully furnished home.

Home exchanges eliminate accommodation costs, making long-term travel more affordable. They typically include full access to the homeowner’s amenities, such as kitchen appliances, furnishings, and personal items, contributing to a seamless, lived-in experience. Exchange platforms often have review systems and verified profiles to ensure trust and safety between parties.

When choosing your home away from home, consider the following factors:

Local Amenities
Look for nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, cafes, and healthcare services to meet everyday needs.

Accessibility
Check the availability of public transit options or parking facilities if you have a vehicle. Consider walkability for daily errands and leisure activities.

Proximity to Attractions
Select a neighbourhood close to key attractions, restaurants, and public transport to maximize convenience and minimize travel time.

Safety
Research crime rates and reviews from previous guests to ensure the area is safe, especially for late arrivals and nighttime walks.

Noise Levels
Investigate the general noise environment—busy streets, nightlife, or ongoing construction may affect your comfort.

Neighbourhood Vibe
Understand the general atmosphere, whether it’s family-friendly, bustling, quiet, or artsy, to ensure it matches your preferences.

Rules and Regulations
Be aware of any local restrictions or homeowner association rules that might impact your stay.

Internet Connectivity
Verify that the property offers reliable internet if you need to work or stay connected during your trip.

Cultural Differences
Consider cultural norms and household expectations to ensure a respectful and smooth experience.

Climate and Environment
Consider how the local weather and environment (e.g., proximity to parks, waterfronts) align with your planned activities.

Tips

  1. Before finalizing your booking, we recommend using tools like Google Maps (street view) to virtually explore the area around the accommodation. Walking around the building and neighbourhood can provide valuable insight into what amenities and services are nearby.

  2. Consider mobility factors such as stairs or elevator access. If you have difficulty with stairs, avoid relying solely on elevators, particularly in older buildings where outages may occur. Check the size of the accommodation, including number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and bed sizes to ensure comfort.

  3. Review photos carefully for bathroom facilities to confirm the shower or tub meets your needs.

  4. Confirm if linens and towels are provided.

  5. Outdoor space is a bonus — look for patios or ground-level areas with tables, chairs, and sun or shade umbrellas for dining al fresco. If you plan to BBQ, find out if grills (plancha or disposable BBQ’s) are allowed.

  6. Ensuite laundry facilities add convenience.

  7. Depending on the season, air conditioning or heating may be essential.

  8. Make sure bike and car parking options meet your needs.

  9. Consider proximity to public transit hubs, such as train stations or airports, and available connections including Uber, tram, or walk.

  10. Always read previous guest reviews. Reviews often shed light on noise levels, how well-stocked kitchens are, and other essential features.

  11. Communicate clearly and politely with your host. Avoid late evening arrivals, confirm your booking details multiple times, and introduce yourself to build rapport. Consider timing around holidays and store hours.
